Murder of Two Girls, 11 and 13, Has Small Oklahoma Town on Edge | Print |

WELEETKA, Okla. - Maybe they stumbled onto a crime in progress. Perhaps they were ambushed by "drunks and dopeheads." Or maybe it was some kind of thrill killing. The slayings of two girls - ages 11 and 13 - who were shot along a rural back road have baffled investigators and struck fear into townspeople, who are now afraid to let their children out of their sight.

"Still no motive, and I hate to say that," Ben Rosser, an agent with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, said Wednesday. "This could be some kind of random thrill killing, it could be an attempted abduction, it could be somebody that just for whatever reason had a personal motive, maybe mistaken identity or possibly they did interrupt something down near the bridge. We just don't know."

Taylor Paschal-Placker, 13, and Skyla Whitaker, 11, were killed Sunday afternoon near a bridge. Both had been shot in the head and chest.

The brutality has rattled this working-class community of 1,000, situated 70 miles south of Tulsa.

PRATT -- It looks like farmers are going to get a farm bill from Congress whether they like it or not but they're going to have to wait a little longer before the bill becomes law.

The President vetoed the farm bill Wednesday but through a printing error it was missing a 34-page section. The House overrode the veto 316-108 and the Senate was ready to do the same when the missing section was discovered, according to the Associated Press.

ImageHUTCHINSON -- Oohhhhh, but the one in Rockwall, Texas, is off.

As predicted by the mince-no-words Sir Cowell, Jason Castro's packed bags will come in handy tonight because he's out, a victim of his own doing. Give an accuracy award to whichever friend told Jason that he "Shot the Tambourine Man" on Tuesday night.

Sebelius Veto of Coal-Fired Plants Was Expected | Print |
Written by The Garden City Telegram
    Mar 24, 2008 at 05:52 AM

    (From The Garden City Telegram)

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius didn't surprise anyone by rejecting a plan to allow construction of two new coal-fired power plants in Finney County.

Her veto Friday on an energy bill that would clear the way for the $3.6 billion expansion of the Sunflower Electric Power Corp. facility at Holcomb set the stage for lawmakers to attempt an override. With a veto-proof Senate margin, House Speaker Melvin Neufeld, R-Ingalls, was left to land votes still needed in that chamber.

The bill addresses regulatory certainty Kansas needs to compete with other states for businesses, and includes provisions for wind and other renewable energy, plus energy conservation proposals.
